Richard Litkowski began his career as a law clerk to Chief Justice Antonio Lamer of the Supreme Court of Canada in 1989-1990. Since then, he has argued serious criminal appeals before the Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court of Canada, with over 200 reported decisions.

Richard was called to the bar in 1991 after clerking at the Supreme Court of Canada for Chief Justice Antonio Lamer, one of Canada’s most distinguished and influential judges in the field of criminal law. Early in his career, Richard had a wide-ranging trial and appeal practice, working with a number of leading criminal lawyers such as Alan Gold, Michelle Fuerst, Clayton Ruby and Marlys Edwardh. His practice now focuses on appeals before the Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court of Canada. He has argued hundreds of appeals dealing with convictions for all types of offences, including successful appeals in lengthy and complex murder cases. He was a founding member of the Pro Bono Inmate Appeal Program and has appeared for 25 years for unrepresented inmates before the Court of Appeal in Toronto and Kingston as part of that Program. He has also been appointed Amicus Curiae by the Superior Court of Justice in a number of cases, including murder trials.

Richard is also very active in continuing legal education. He taught Evidence and Advanced Evidence at Osgoode Hall Law School for a number of years. He was an instructor at the Bar Admission Course in Criminal Procedure and Advocacy from 1993-2005, and a Review Counsel and Lecturer at Downtown Legal Services at the University of Toronto Law School from 1996-2006. He also contributes to various publications, including The Supreme Court Law Review, and participates in educational events sponsored by the Law Society of Ontario, the Criminal Lawyers Association, and the Advocates’ Society. He is a mentor in the Criminal Lawyers Association Mentoring Program.
